A way to live a mission in your community based on John 17:1-11, a reading from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Seventh Sunday of Easter, 5/28/17. Jesus prays for the disciples as his last meal with them ends. He asks to be glorified. [To glorify can mean to be honored; in Jesus’ case honored for his works of power and for the gift of eternal life.] Jesus was in glory [in honor] even before the world was made. What Jesus has told them about God has been given to him by God to say. The disciples have believed Jesus’ words and deeds and that his words and deeds are from God. He asks God to protect them and give them unity. Jesus has kept safe all but one of them [Judas]. They are not of the world’s ways just as Jesus is not of the world’s ways. He asks that they be sanctified or made holy [holy can mean separate—that is, different from the world]. He prays that they be made holy in the truth, God’s truth.
A theme: Jesus’ disciples are to live Jesus’ way, the way of justice and love; not the world’s way of injustice and hardness of heart.
