A way to live a mission in a church based on Mark 1:29-39, a reading from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, 2/4/18.
Leaving the synagogue, Simon and Andrew with James and John go to Simon’s home. Simon’s mother-in-law is in bed with a fever. When he is told about her, he goes to her. He takes her by the hand and lifts her up. The fever leaves and she is strong enough to serve the four at the table.
The Sabbath over at sundown (and, so, able to do the work of healing), many sick or possessed with demons are brought to him. He casts out many demons. Jesus will not let the demons who know him speak [to keep his identity a secret].
In the morning, Jesus rises early, goes to a deserted place and prays. Simon and his friends find him and say, “Everyone seeks you.” Instead, Jesus leads them to go to other towns to proclaim that God’s kingdom [or power] is breaking in. He goes throughout Galilee proclaiming the message in synagogues and casting our demons.
A theme: Jesus heals many through God’s power.
