A way to live in the mission field of home and friends:
Home life and friendships that are fed, led and empowered by Jesus’ words and actions will last and be empowered by heaven, God.
Based on John 6:51-58 (see a retelling below); a reading that comes from the Revised Common Lectionary for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, (8/19/18).
Jesus builds on having fed the large crowd. He is the real bread sent by God. Feed on his words and actions. He is giving himself to them in his words and actions. They are eating, living by, his words and actions.
The people dispute his words. They say he cannot give them his flesh. They do not get the inner meaning of eating his flesh. He means to be fed and to be led by his life, his words and actions. Jesus goes on to say, “If you live by my words and actions, my teachings and deeds, I will raise you up in the life to come, ‘the last day.’” They are to both eat and drink his body and blood, his words and actions. Because the Father has sent him, he is the bread from heaven that feeds forever.
These are his sayings at the synagogue in Capernaum.
A theme: Take Jesus’ words and actions to heart, “eat” and “drink” of them.
